There was uproar in the ranks of the Arsenal fans when the dreaded news of Robin van Persie’s transfer to hated Premier league rivals was compounded by the shock sale of Alex Song to the Spanish giants Barcelona. Song had over two years left on his contract and Gooners could not understand why Arsene Wenger would allow him to leave, especially when many thought that the midfield already needed strengthening.
At the time, stories started to surface about the reasons for the move, some rumours claimed that it was Wenger that arranged the deal and that Song did not want to leave. This website was contacted by an “insider” who told us that Song had been trying to arrange a new contract but he was constantly put off.
Well finally the truth is out, from Song’s own mouth. The 25-year old Cameroon international has revealed that it was his wish to join Barcelona and he had a very hard time convincing the Arsenal boss to sanction it. Maybe Song has decided to speak out because he feels an obligation to Wenger who helped him so much in his career.
“It was hard to convince him and say goodbye because he really helped me and my family when I arrived at Arsenal when I was 17.
“But when you want to leave, the club cannot say no. A chance like this only happens once in a lifetime and you must take it.”
A little late Alex, but better late than never I suppose.
